Boasting more than 1,600 kilometres of coastline, eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, a rich vein of colonial architecture and teeming wildlife population, there is never a dull moment on board or on shore. Get the heart pumping with a climb to the top of Sigiriya. An ancient rock fortress with one of the world’s oldest formal gardens at its base, it rises out of the surrounding tropical jungle with well-deserved majesty. The 1,200 steps pass wall frescoes and open onto a plateau that once housed a palace. Near the hill country town of Ella lies Little Adam’s Peak. Set the alarm for a pre-dawn walk to the top just in time to catch a splendid sunrise. Elephant spotting is a top-ranked attraction, and, with more than 26 national parks, you’re spoilt for choice. The Kaudulla National Park grasslands are home to more than 200 elephants as well as monkeys, crocodiles and the odd leopard. Another option is Minneriya National Park, which is part of the elephant migratory corridor.

Portuguese, British and Dutch colonists all left their mark on the country and the southern coastal town of Galle Fort is a step back in time. Europe meets Asia within the walls of the 18th-century Dutch-built fortifications and old quarter. Colonial influences are present throughout Sri Lanka and a visit to one of its historic tea plantations is both a history lesson and opportunity to soak in mist-covered hills and stepped rows of tea bushes. Traditional Ceylon tea pairs beautifully with the fiery cuisine that is Sri Lanka’s hallmark. Dine local style on string hoppers with sour fish curry tempered with a classic coconut sambal or challenge your yacht chef to create an onboard feast.
